This wine is the first release under the Silver Webs label made exclusively from grapes grown at Smeatonís Martin Hill Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills appellation near Adelaide, South Australia. John and Jan Smeaton and daughter Nikki purchased their vineyard site in 1995 and planted the first 35 acres the following year. Janís family has a history of winemaking dating back to 1892 when her great grandfather was one of the pioneer families that planted the first grapes in the Coonawarra region of South Australia. That region has gone on to become Australiaís most admired producer of red varietals and blends that reflect the unique terra rossa soils of the area.

The Internet Wine Database had to say: "Full-bodied dry red wine; fairly deep inky red. Aromas of white pepper (curiously), but then red fruits emerge, and you get a whiff of strawberry and red raspberry. Dark fruits (plums) dominate flavors with a finish reminiscent of malted milk balls. Nice balance. Very silky, fruit-derived tannins...A potential long-term keeper. Still tasty several days after being opened.

Just south of the city of Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills produces excellent wines. This is a Merlot specialist. Miles would like this one. Owners Jan and John Smeaton live in Athens, GA, but fly home each season to work the harvest. (see full article)
